Sergio Ferrer, 36, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the death of 57-year-old Paul Peavey, a dog breeder in Clear Creek County, Colorado

Ferrer was arrested on August 24 on an unrelated warrant from Nebraska, the same day Peavey's body was discovered on his property

Paul Peavey, who bred Doberman Pinschers, was last seen nearly a week before his body was found partially buried on his property by friends and community members

Investigators believe Peavey was killed on the evening of August 19 in his home near Idaho Springs, Colorado

Ten Doberman Pinscher puppies were missing from Peavey’s property, and Ferrer later admitted to stealing them, claiming some were sold in Denver

In his arrest affidavit, Ferrer gave conflicting stories about his involvement with Peavey, at one point claiming self-defense and alleging Peavey tried to shoot him first

A 9mm handgun, believed to be used in the murder, along with Peavey's phone and metal detecting equipment, was found at Ferrer's residence

The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office did not initially act on a missing person report, leading to criticism for their lack of urgency and failure to join the community search for Peavey

Friends and community members found Peavey's body without the assistance of the sheriff's office, which has since acknowledged their mishandling of the case

The community is in shock over Peavey's death and the subsequent arrest of Ferrer, who was known locally and had previously operated a hair salon in Idaho Springs
