A devastating fire at a Tyson Foods facility in Camilla, Georgia, resulted in one fatality and severe injuries to several individuals early Friday morning. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze.

A spokesperson for Tyson Foods confirmed the death and expressed condolences: “We are collaborating with local authorities to determine the cause of a late-night fire at our Camilla, Georgia facility that led to the death of one person and several injuries. We extend our deepest sympathies to their family and friends during this difficult time.”

According to a union spokesperson, the incident was due to a boiler explosion. The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which represents over 15,000 poultry workers in the southern U.S., including 1,600 at the Camilla facility, reported that several people were severely burned in the explosion.

The victim, identified as a 61-year-old woman from Las Vegas by Mitchell County Deputy Coroner Robby Willis, was not an employee of the plant. She was accompanying her husband, a truck driver who was loading products at the facility, and was asleep in the truck’s sleeper compartment when the explosion occurred. The blast caused a concrete wall to collapse onto the tractor-trailer, resulting in her death.

Her husband was inside the building at the time of the explosion but was not injured. The victim’s body was recovered shortly after 2:00 p.m. Friday after being pinned under debris.

Stuart Appelbaum and Edgar Fields of the union issued a statement: “We are working with the company and local emergency authorities to ensure that all workers impacted by this incident are taken care of. Our members and the community of Camilla rely on this facility; it is crucial that there be a thorough investigation into what happened last night. Workers must be able to work safely in this facility. No worker should ever have to worry about not returning home safe and sound.”

Union representatives are there to assist those injured in the explosion.
