IRS Sending Out Secret Stimulus Checks: Are You Eligible?

IRS

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that over one million taxpayers who missed claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns will automatically receive stimulus payments later this month.

Eligibility and Payment Details:

  • Automatic Payments: Eligible individuals will receive payments directly, either by direct deposit or paper check, without needing to file an amended return.
  • Eligibility Confirmation: Taxpayers will receive a separate letter notifying them of the incoming payment.
  • Payment Amounts: The maximum payment amount is $1,400 per eligible individual.
  • Total Disbursement: The IRS estimates a total of $2.4 billion will be distributed nationwide.

How to Know if You’re Eligible:

  • Review 2021 Tax Return: Check your 2021 tax return to see if you left the Recovery Rebate Credit field blank or entered $0.
  • IRS Data Review: The IRS is identifying eligible taxpayers based on internal data.

What if You Didn’t File a 2021 Return?

  • File Your Return: If you did not file a 2021 tax return, you may still be eligible.
  • Claim the Credit: File your 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025, and claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
