North Hollywood, CA – Robert Machray, a beloved actor known for his comedic roles in numerous sitcoms and his impressive stage career, passed away on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood. He was 79.

Machray’s husband, Luigi Camperchioli, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the actor succumbed to complications following two strokes and a recent diagnosis of dementia.

A Sitcom Icon:

Machray will be fondly remembered by many as Fire Marshal Dobbins on the iconic sitcom “Cheers.” He appeared in four episodes between 1990 and 1993, often becoming the unwitting target of hilarious pranks orchestrated by Sam Malone and the rest of the bar’s mischievous staff.

His comedic talents shone through in a wide range of sitcoms, including “Operation Petticoat,” “Three’s Company,” “Roseanne,” “Sister, Sister,” “Suddenly Susan,” and “The Drew Carey Show.”

Beyond Sitcoms:

While primarily known for his television work, Machray also made his mark on the silver screen. He appeared in cult classics like “Cutting Class” (1993) alongside a young Brad Pitt, “Christmas in Connecticut” (1992) directed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and “Master of Disguise” (2002). He also lent his voice to the video game “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III – Rebel Strike” (2003).

A Renowned Stage Actor:

Machray was a highly respected stage performer, earning critical acclaim for his portrayal of Pozzo in “Waiting for Godot” and his performance in the 1999 revival of “Amadeus.” In 2002, he won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his captivating performance as Orson Welles in “Orson’s Shadow.”

His final acting role was in a 2011 episode of “Parks and Recreation.”
