From Chefs to Cooks: How the Food World is Feeding LA After the Fires

Los Angeles Wildfires: How the Food Industry is Stepping Up to Help

The devastating Los Angeles wildfires have ignited an outpouring of support from the community, including a significant response from the food industry. From chefs and restaurants to cookware brands, many are offering aid and assistance to those impacted by the disaster.

A Personal Perspective:

Having personally experienced the trauma of losing a home to a Southern California wildfire, I understand the profound impact these events can have on individuals and families. While every situation is unique, I recall how even small acts of kindness, such as donations of basic necessities like toiletries or kitchen supplies, provided a sense of normalcy during a difficult time.

Industry-Wide Support:

The restaurant industry has been at the forefront of relief efforts, with many establishments providing meals and other forms of assistance to those in need.

  • Chef-founded brands like Snibbs are distributing free meals and shoes to impacted service workers.
  • Cookware companies like Great Jones and HexClad are donating essential kitchen items to help those who have lost their homes rebuild.
  • Olive oil producer Graza is sending its products to local organizations and restaurants supporting relief efforts.

Brands Pledging Donations:

Several brands are also pledging donations tied to product sales, allowing consumers to support relief efforts while making purchases.

  • Big Night is collaborating with an illustrator to create a limited-edition tote bag, with all net proceeds benefiting World Central Kitchen.
  • Maru Coffee is donating a portion of its in-store and online sales to wildfire relief organizations.
  • Common Space Brewery is leading a national initiative, “We Love LA,” where participating breweries create special beers with proceeds benefiting local non-profits.

Retailer Support:

  • Kroger is raising $1 million for fire relief and matching customer donations up to $500,000.
  • Gelson’s is also matching customer donations to support relief efforts in Los Angeles communities.
