Spirit Airlines Tightens Dress Code, Bans “Offensive” Tattoos

Spirit Airlines has updated its contract of carriage, giving the airline more power to deny boarding to passengers based on their attire and even visible tattoos.

The revised policy, which took effect in 2025, specifically prohibits “lewd, obscene, or offensive” clothing and body art. This is a significant change from the previous version, which used more general language.

What Could Get You Kicked Off a Spirit Flight?

The updated contract outlines a range of behaviors that could result in being denied boarding or removed from a Spirit Airlines flight, including:

  • Disorderly or abusive conduct: This includes any behavior that disrupts other passengers or interferes with flight crew duties.
  • Intoxication or drug use: Passengers appearing under the influence of drugs or alcohol may be denied boarding.
  • Security threats: Any behavior that poses a security risk to the aircraft or other passengers is prohibited.
  • Contagious diseases: Passengers with contagious diseases that are transmissible during flight may be denied boarding.
  • Inadequate clothing: This includes being barefoot, wearing see-through clothing, or clothing that exposes private areas of the body.
  • Offensive clothing or body art: The new policy specifically prohibits “lewd, obscene, or offensive” clothing and body art, which could include certain tattoos.

Recent Controversy

This policy change comes after a recent incident where a Texas man was removed from a Spirit Airlines flight for wearing a hoodie with the phrase “FVCK HATE WORLD TOUR.” The flight attendant deemed the message “obscene.”

Important Note:

It’s crucial to review the specific terms and conditions of any airline you fly with, as policies can vary.
