Osiel Cardenas Guillen, former leader of Mexico's Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas, was released from a U.S. prison on Friday
Cardenas Guillen, 57, was transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after his release
He was captured in 2003 in Mexico and extradited to the United States in 2007
In the U.S., Cardenas Guillen pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, money laundering, and extortion
He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2010 and fined $50 million
Cardenas Guillen still faces several pending charges in Mexico, but it is unclear if the U.S. will deport him
Under his leadership, the Gulf Cartel became a major player in drug trafficking, exporting large quantities of cocaine and marijuana to the U.S
He was nicknamed "El Mata Amigos" (Friend Killer) for his ruthless actions
Cardenas Guillen recruited former Mexican special forces soldiers to form Los Zetas, which became a notorious gang
After his arrest, Los Zetas separated from the Gulf Cartel in 2010, leading to violent conflicts over control of drug routes in Mexico
